Does it need to be said? Does it need to be said by me? Does it need to be said by me now? These are the questions I am often asking myself to monitor my urge to speak. It is a challenging discipline in yoga that requires me to consciously observe my mind and to be more aware of what comes out of my mouth. Is it quality content or quantity content? Useless or degrading information contributes to a negative environment and takes up space and time better used in upgraded, informative and inspiring conversation. Monitoring my urge to speak is also implementing the yamas- moral principles more into my daily practice.

Ahimsa non violence- Is what I am about to say harmful or hurtful?

Satya- is what I am saying true and factual? Am I speaking based on knowledge or parroting something I heard to support my bias?

Aparigraha- Am I repeating myself or adding more than is really needed to the conversation?

Bhramacharya-Moderating the senses- including the urge to speak. Just because I am thinking it does not mean it needs to be said or heard. How many of us make useless small talk simply because we are uncomfortable with silence when a smile will do?

Asteya- stealing. Knowing when to stop the conversation so as to not take up more time than is necessary or than has been allotted in teaching. (still working on this one!)

Tolerating the urge to speak creates the spaces in conversation and silence in general that enables deeper reflection, clarity and absorption. It also helps to reclaim the control over our mind necessary for progress in our practice.

At Yoga Studio is temporarily closed from for reforming and repairs.

A temporary At Yoga Schedule is offered at Yoga Studio Svastha(ヨガスタジオ スヴァスタ) in Kichijoji. At Yoga tickets can be used. Drop in classes and any new 10 ticket cards must be purchased on line only, no cash accepted in the rental studio. Props are provided in the studio.
